This antimycotic is used in tissue culture. It affects the cell membranes of fungal and yeast cells and forms channels, causing the loss of cations from these cells. Together with the inhibition of a number of membrane proteins, this leads to the death of yeasts and fungi being promoted. Amphotericin B is ineffective against viruses and bacteria.
