Postnatal diagnostics
Karyotyping is often used to detect chromosomal abnormalities in both newborns and adults.
The desire for such a clarification often arises from conspicuous symptoms that need to be investigated more closely or from a family history with a burden. The latter can suggest preventive genetic testing in order to initiate precautionary measures at an early stage - and not just when clear symptoms appear or even afterwards.
The requirements of postnatal diagnostics differ fundamentally from those of prenatal diagnostics: a time window does not play a role here and the collection of peripheral blood is risk-free. In addition, the short-term cell culture, which only takes three days, makes subsequent analysis considerably easier.
